Four Free WordPress Hosts Compared

Guest Post by Pradeep Kumar S.

WordPress is an open source blog publishing software that makes blogging life more simple. Many people, including me, prefer Self-hosted WordPress blog. But hosting will surely make your wallet lighter.

In this post, I picked some trusted and worthy free Web Hosts and mostly used exclusively for WordPress.  All of them have Software Installer Script which allows installing WordPress directly. They have cool features like paid Web Hosts.

0fees.net – zero fees web hosting

0fees web hosting provides professional, fast PHP and MySQL hosting. It is powered by clustered hosting technology.

Free Hosting For WordPress0fees Hosting Features:

  • 300 MB disk space
  • 10 GB monthly transfer
  • PHP with MySQL databases
  • 5 Add-on domains
  • 5 Sub domains
  • PHP Flags manager
  • FTP account
  • File manager
  • Web mail, POP3 email

000webhost.com ($0.00 web host)

000webhost provides you top class free web hosting services without any advertising. It has Fantastico Autoinstaller which lets you install softwares like WordPress easily. There are no Hidden costs and no restrictive terms.

000webhost Features:

  • 1500 MB disk space
  • 100 GB monthly transfer
  • 5 Add-on domains
  • 5 Sub domains
  • 5 Email Addresses
  • 2 MySQL Databases
  • FTP account
  • 5 Email Accounts

Byet Internet Services

It is one of the cool free Web Hosts for WordPress. It has Vista Panel as the control panel and has Fantastico Automatic Script Installer, which lets you install many applications and popular scripts easily.

Byet Hosting Features:

  • 5500 MB disk space
  • 200 GB monthly transfer
  • 50 add-on domains
  • 50 sub domains
  • FTP account
  • Unlimited POP email accounts
  • Online file manager
  • 50 MySQL databases
  • PhpMyAdmin

100WebSpace

This is also one of the cool Web Host, but there are some negatives in it. This Web Host currently not supports WordPress 2.7 and you can host only one domain. But yet, it has many other cool features. You can check its site for more details. One annoying thing is, it will force the users to have a small banner :(

100 WebSpace Features:

  • 100 MB Disk Space
  • 3 GB Data Transfer
  • 5 Sub Domains
  • 1 MySQL Database
  • FTP account
  • POP3/IMAP E-mail (No SMTP)
  • PHP, Perl/CGI-BIN

I’m currently using 0fees.net. It has Fantastico Installer which lets users to install WordPress, Joomla, Dragonfly and many applications in a single click. I like its control panel very much. It is so user friendly and comes with video tutorials too.

Editors Note: Though free hosting is a great way to try out the self hosted WordPress, I wouldn’t recommend that in the long run. Uptime is not guaranteed; if your blog makes it to the digg home and the traffic takes your blog down, you miss the chance. But it’s a good way to learn stuffs and try out the self hosted WordPress.

I would say that you choose a paid host if you can afford that. Do email me when you are switching over to wordpress. I will help you find a good host.. :)

I will switch to paid host after my first Google Check ! :D
But free hosts are really cool and also in the same way safe…

Hope you get your Adsense check asap. Yeah, the features look cool, but uptime is definitely an issue. I dont think any free host can give you guaranteed uptime, does 0Fees offer that..?

            • Posted April 22, 2009 at 20:56 | Permalink

I think uptime is not guaranteed that much, but surely it prompts us during those issues ! ;)

Uptime is very important, esp when peak load comes in. Everything else is secondary, but for a new blog Free hosting is cool.
Thanks for sharing this, it was a good post :)

That is interesting information. Are there any specific dis-advantages of hosting our blog with them, instead of other paid hosting providers (Apart from the amount, storage space, domain names, email’s).

Personally, I dont think they lack in any of the features that paid hosting provides. For instance, Byet gives you 5 GB storage, and 20 GB transfer which is more than enough for your first year, unless you are not an instant hit..

One thing that definitely matters is uptime. I dont think any free host can guarantee uptime and data security. Paid hosts usually have a 99.9% uptime guarantee and mostly uses RAID servers. (Dreamhost even pays back the monthly fess if the server is down for more than the guaranteed time). Suppose one of your posts make it to the digg homepage, the free host would probably go down with the first 5000 visits. A digg homepage can bring you atleast 50,000 visits, so you might loose 45,000 visitors. That would be a big loss in my words..
You would also run out of bandwidth if you make it to digg, that means the blog would be down for the whole month :(

Even paid hosts cant take heavy loads (unless you are on VPS or dedicated), but it can survive much more than a free host, say atleast 40,000 visits. And such traffic doesnt come every now and then, it might be a once in the life time chance, infact it would be a break for you.
So go for paid hosts if you dont wish to take the risk.

      Cheers…

Thanks man, you are safe at the present host. Now things are even better there with lots of bandwidth and uptime is guaranteed to a great extend :)

I am a user of 0fees.net and going good for me. this is very good hosting solution for beginner.

    • Posted April 22, 2009 at 18:49 | Permalink

Pradeep is also using 0Fees, but by the features mentioned, Byet looks better. Anyway, when you find that you are on your way up, shift to a paid host without furthur thought, Good luck :)

well here i have used byet host services it is good with 99% uptime and the prblem is low my sql database size which grows as you keep writing more and more posts….

itis great service you can use for the 1st yr and then switch to paid one

    • Posted April 23, 2009 at 14:14 | Permalink

Yeah, for the first year I guess Free hosting is enough. and Byet, looks like a better option out of all.
btw, you are from a blogspot blog and why do you need hosting..? I believe that you have a different site for that.

Let me adivce you to move to WordPress asap. its the best, atleast 15 times better than Blogger. Here is a switching guide that might come handy :)

I have tried lots of website hosting service almost all the services sucks. My friend suggested gwebhosting and I am really very happy with the services, and they are secure, reliable, Economical. If you are looking for uptime and technical service then your answer is gwebhosting.

These days even the other professional hosts are cheap too. HostMonster which is often graded as the best comes for $5.95 per month, thats a good deal for me :)

Thanks for the info btw.. Cheers..

Had no idea there were even halfway decent free alternatives out there. Oh well, I’m happy with my host. :-) But it’s good to know about these sites for friends who are curious about beginning their WordPress journeys.

Yeps, I would have moved to WordPress if I knew there are free hosts like this, never even tried to find any, who in the world thought someone would give free hosting? I never did :(

But I am not complaining, I am glad the way things have turned out :)

Other than 100webspace, the others seem to be overselling (too much). You need to be careful about how much you use. Sometimes, these guys deactivate your account due to the traffic spike caused by the stumble/digg effects.

    So paid hosts are recommended.

(pay-for-what-you-use sounds good to me. Knew one, but forgot. If anyone does find something like that, please inform me :) )

Thank you for the list i think i’ll go for 0fees
