Notes

Content Management System

In the Web 1.0 ages, websites were dull. They came with the HTML code and a style sheet. The content was part of the page.

When Web 2.0 rolled out, Content Management Systems or CMS was introduced. CMS’s are softwares that helps publishing content online and managing their rights, permissions etc. CMS’s also makes publishing easy so even those without HTML knowledge could easily publish online.

Features of Content Management Systems included:

  • Content Portability: Since the content was stored in a central database, it could be easily moved across design changes and software upgrades.
  • Scalability: CMS’s allowed the dynamic growth of any website. Websites build on CMS’s are easily scalable. For e.g. If you wish to add a store along with your fashion website, it could be easily done without having to migrate to a totally new system.
  • Design Flexibility: Since the content is separately stored in a database and not along with the page, it was easy to migrate between designs. We can change between themes easily, just like that.

A CMS have 3 main parts. The database at it’s centre, a template, and a style sheet. The CMS acts like a mixer and presents the mix to the user.

Let’s WordPress

WordPress is one of the most popular CMS’s particularly optimised for Blogging. WordPress comes with:

There are two versions or WordPress. The WordPress hosted, hosting-free system at WordPress.com and the Self-Hosted system at WordPress.org. You need a hosting to use the WordPress from WordPress.org

Concluding Thoughts

Overall the experience was great. I think I could inspire some of them to get into blogging and try their luck. The college hospitality and event coordination was awesome.

Hope you enjoy the slides. Feel Free to use it anywhere you like.
