With the buzz surrounding Google’s penalty for duplicate content, more bloggers have resorted to showing only excerpts on the home page of their blogs. These excerpts usually end with a link prompting the reader to click if he/she wants to continue reading the article. These links are created using the wordpress Read More Tag.

Why You ought to Use the Read More Tag

The read more tag can dramatically increase the amount of pageviews on your site/blog. I would have gone further to explain this but Alex of Blogussion has already done an excellent job explaining this with his post; Double Your Pageviews – Pros & Cons of Displaying Partial Posts.

Read More Tag in the Post Editor

How to Configure The Read More Tag Effectively

Wrong configuration of the read more tag could leave you ranking for useless anchor texts such as “Read the rest of this entry” or “Continue reading”. What I’m saying in essence is that you MUST add nofollow to the Read More link. Since I’m a huge fan of the less wordpress plug-in movement, I prefer to edit the file directly. Follow the steps below to add nofollow to the read more tag.

Using FTP, navigate the wp-includes folder of your wordpress installation and download the file, post-template.php. Remember to store a backup of this file should things go wrong along the way.

Depending on which editor you use (I use Macromedia Dreamweaver), open the file and find line 226 or search for the line that has the following code:

$output .= apply_filters( 'the_content_more_link', ' <a href="' . get_permalink() . "#more-$id\" class=\"more-link\">$more_link_text", $more_link_text );

Change the above code to:

$output .= apply_filters( 'the_content_more_link', ' <a href="' . get_permalink() . "\" class=\"more-link\"rel=\"nofollow\">$more_link_text", $more_link_text );

Save the file and upload it back to the wp-includes folder and reload your blog’s home page.

The above tweak would have done two things to your read more link.

The link would no longer have the #more-postid attached to the end of the url e.g. http://www.ooo.com/goofy.html#more-301 becomes http://www.ooo.com/goofy.html and when you click on the link, the page opens right at the beginning of the post and not at the beginning of the read more tag function. This is helpfully for your readers who find it hard to remember what they just read in the excerpt.

Checking the link using Zachary Fox’s Firefox Addon, Nofollow, reveals that the link is now a nofollow link.

NOTE: You’ll have to apply the above tweak each time you upgrade to a new version of WordPress. Unfortunately not everybody is as patient as I am so some of you are better off getting this fix using a plug-in though while writing this piece, I googled but couldn’t find a plug-in that does this.

Update: The Custom More Link Plugin does exactly the same job. If you don’t like editing the code, use the plugin.

When images are online, speed outwits Quality. We all like fast loading pages. When the loading bar keeps on rolling, the message is – “time to hit the close button”.

PNG or JPEG or GIF?

We are often confused between which image formats to choose from. If you have observed, text is more readable in PNG and photos look better in JPEG.

Thumb rule: PNG or GIF for text – JPEG for Photographs and the like.

Examples and More info: How to Choose an Image Format for Screenshots.

Optimize Using ‘Save for Web’ In Photoshop

Photoshop has an image optimizer for the web. It has a lot of custom options for every image format.

First Crop the image to the size of your post area. Cropping / Resizing is different from scaling down the image using WordPress image handler. When you scale down the image size is not reduced, just the image appears small.

Cropping an image will actually reduce its size; smaller is better.

Save For Web can be found under the File Menu or press Shift + Control + Alt + S. A window will open up.

Save For Web In Photoshop

Play with the options and make sure that image is not over 50kb. If you have to show larger images, display a smaller preview, Upload the large version separately and link the preview image to the large one.

Optimize Images Using WordPress Plugin

The WordPress Smush.it plugin is the plugin of choice for this job. It uses the Smush.it api to optimize images. Once installed, all images you upload are automatically compressed and optimized.

Smush.it compresses images but converting formats where ever necessary and removing unnecessary and unused data.

Optimize Existing Images via the Media Library

Existing images can be smushed using the “Smush.it now” link in the Media Library.

Formatting Images for RSS Readers

If you see that your images break between text in the RSS Feed or Email, follow this detailed guide.

If your images looks like figure 1 online and like figure 2 in your RSS reader or inbox, then follow some simple steps to make them look good.

Formatting Images in the RSS Readers

There are two was to do this:

Using an inline style element with every image (Not Recommended):

WordPress uses classes to define the style of images. Right aligned images are included in a class allignright and it’s defined in your style sheet, style.css.

Unfortunately, RSS readers cannot read your style sheets, so the styling of the images is lost.

To counter this we can include an explicit style=”float:right;” inline with the image. See the code below:

[sourcecode language='css']

[/sourcecode]

But using inline style is a bad practice, but if the next one doesn’t work for you, add the style inline.

Using the Align attribute:

Add align=”right” (replace right with left, or center if you want your image to be in those areas)

See the example below:

[sourcecode language='css']

[/sourcecode]

How to Add the Attributes

- Switch to the code editor – HTML View:

Switch to HTML View

- Find the code for the image and copy-paste the align attribute (align=”right”) to the end of the code. That’s it.

Insert Align Attribute Manually

Create a Custom Quicktag for the Align attribute

Either you can save the attributes in a text file and copy paste them every time or you may create a custom Quicktag.

Custom Quicktag for Align Attribute

Quicktags are defined in quicktags.js in the wp-includes\js folder. In WordPress 2.8 this file is compressed and editing is not easily possible. There is another file quicktags.dev.js which is the expanded version.

- Backup both files and delete quicktags.js. Rename quicktags.dev.js to quicktags.js.

- Insert the following function to the list of other similar functions defined in quicktags.js (the renamed version of quicktags.dev.js):

It would give you an idea of how to properly configure the plugin and get better results. Read it here.

The following questions have come-up, I thought its worth sharing: (Questions are great learning opportunities, so keep asking!)

Betty Byrnes asked:

In WP I use the All-In-One-SEO plugin. With it I can re-title each post. Actually, I end up with two titles. Now, I’m not sure I’m going to use the correct terms here, so bear with me…
-One title is in the page header (top of the web page)
-The other title is within the posting.

Is this good or bad, or does it matter?

My other question has to do with permalinks and whether to remove unimportant words so that the permalinks are keyword focused. I’ve seen some articles about doing this and I think I’ve even see some plugins that do it automatically.
EX: (original) the-best-patio-dining-in-the-kokomo-area
(change to) dining-in-kokomo or dining-kokomo

Luca also asked:

I have the questions as Betty so I look forward to your next post. Another thing I’m not clear on is with the keywords in the All In One SEO – can they be different that the WordPress tags and which are more important?

Before we start, SEO is a very dynamic concept. What is right today might not be right two years from now. Google and other search engines update their algorithm, and then everything changes.

Again, SEO is a continuing process; it doesn’t start today and end tomorrow. Learn some basics, practice them post after post.

The post Title and the Page Title – Should they be same?

No, they need not be same. And yes, the Title on the Page Header (the meta-title) matters. It should contain the main keywords of the post.

The title of a page is the most important factor of SEO. (Most SEO experts have different ideas on every aspect, but they all agree on this).

In fact, this is the most important feature of the All In One SEO Plugin – The ability to use separate titles for post and page.

The Search Engines take the meta-title, i.e. the title you specify in the All In One SEO Pack and your readers will see the title you specify in the post editor. There lies the clue! Usually, I use a keyword rich title in the All In One SEO pack and a User Friendly Title in the Post editor.

E.g. For this post titled, “SEO-ing your Blog with All In One SEO Plugin and Custom Permalinks”, I used the meta title, “SEO with All In One SEO Plugin and Custom Permalinks”. The first title goes into the feed readers and on the Recent Posts. That’s what the readers would see. When Google index this post it, the meta-title would come up on the results.

If you ask me why I did that, I think the second title is a bit better when it comes up on Google. I am not sure of this, but then, when I see that this post is not getting traffic, I can always come back and change the meta-title again. That’s the beauty of this plugin.

Can the Keywords be different from your WordPress tags?

Yes, they can be different and its better if they are different.

The Keywords that you fill in goes into the meta-keywords section in the source code of the page. Google doesn’t take the meta-keywords into consideration, but I think yahoo and other search engines still use them.

All In One SEO plugin at work

The tags that you use are automatically taken as keywords, so if you specify it in the Keywords section or not, it will be considered. But if you repeat them again in plugin keywords area, the meta keywords would contain two instances of the same keyword, which is not very good.

So try not to repeat the WordPress tags in the keywords.

Tags are automatically included as Keywords

E.g. Use keywords from the posts in the keywords section instead of making newer tags. Suppose you have a tag “WordPress” and you do not have a tag “WordPress MU”. When you write a post on WordPress MU, use the tag “WordPress” and in the keywords section enter WordPress MU. So you get the better of two worlds

Should you keep unimportant words on Permalinks?

I think it’s better to remove the un-important words from the permalink. I think there is something called ‘keyword weight’, so fewer the words in the permalink, the more weight each keyword will have, and hence better performance.

For additional reference, refer to this post on Writing Search Engine Friendly URL’s from Labnol where the author observes how Matt Cutts (of Google) uses permalinks on his posts.

In practice, I try to remove some words but always keeps the slugs reader friendly too. Some would follow links based on what they can read from the link (esp. on twitter).

Note: On Blogger this can be implemented using this hack.

Bringing in visitors for your site is not half as difficult as making them read what you have in there. Even if some of them read one of your posts, they will choose to leave soon if you don’t lure them with inviting links. No, people don’t usually click every link that you have on a post (check your analytics). But what if the link is closely related to the post they just read?

This discussion is about writing closely related posts and interlinking them so as to keep the readers stick to your site. So in a way it’s about reducing your bounce rate. There are lots of ways to do that I guess, but we are dealing with BASE POSTS.

Base Posts? eh?

Base posts are those posts that would support another post. The base post will contain information which has its own identity but which is not relevant in the main post.

Oh, I know that sounds like a high school definition, lets crack it. A base post acts as a support post for another post / posts. Which means that, we are going to link to the base post from another post in the future. A base post has its own identity, which means it can act as a stand alone post too. The third feature is that a base posts will have that kind of information that is not relevant in the post it is going to support.

Some Examples Please…

Example 1: When I grew passionate about Twitter, I was sure that I would be going to write about twitter and related applications. So I wrote a twitter quick start guide so that I could link to it from every post on twitter. It would be annoying if I start explaining what twitter is in every post. On the flip side, I can’t assume that everyone who reads those posts knows what twitter is, can I?

Example 2: Every blog will have a RSS subscription option, but not all readers who come to your blog will not know what RSS is. Keeping this in mind, I wrote a post explaining what RSS is and gave a link from near the RSS subscription box.

Now I think the idea of a Base Post is very clear. I could have linked to any external site to explain what RSS is. But the base post had its own reasons. One, I didn’t want an external link from my homepage. Two, I had something to contribute to what was available online. Nah, don’t get the idea that I am too conservative about linking out; I always give out links to every relevant resource online.

A Case Study

When I wrote about the Firefox Firebug Plugin, I also described the effects it would have on your browser; I gave out the solution for the ill effect was to create a different profile in Firefox. But how would you make a profile in Firefox? Well, I wrote that in another post and linked to it.

The result? The post on Firebug got lots of page views and search visits, people who read about it loved the plugin for sure. So they wanted to use it. Also they needed to know how to create a profile too. (In firefox, you won’t find ‘create a new profile’ in any of the menu bars and I was unaware that it had profile support until Binny told me.) So instead of Googling out the way they followed my link!

When to use Base posts and When not to…

Use base posts when:

A portion of a post is not relevant to most of the readers. In many cases as in the above case, a reader coming to the Firebug page would already know how to create Firefox profiles. So that makes the base text irrelevant there

A part of the post can stand on its own as a stand alone post. How to create a Firefox profile can stand as a separate post

You have something to contribute to an article on an external page to which you would have linked if you were not writing the base post. For e.g., instead of writing a base post, you could link to another page on a different blog. But what if you need to add more to what’s available on the linked page? Write a base post, add your own thoughts and link to the external page there.

When you are sure that a post you are planning in your mind is going to hit the homepage on Google and you wish to distribute the link juice to more pages of your blog.

When the base post can serve more than one post i.e. you are sure you will need the base post more than once. For e.g. as we discussed above, I have linked to a base post twitter quick start guide more than once and in almost every where I mention twitter.

Avoid Base Posts when:

The base post is a must read for everyone who reads the first article.

There is a well written post out there on a external post which you can use instead of the base post and you don’t have anything to contribute to it.

Now we are good to roll!

The idea of base post is to make your site a bit more sticky. The more time a visitor sticks in, the more is the chance that they turn into a regular reader. Use Base Posts whenever you feel that you are going to need it again and again and very often. Don’t forget to link out to any relevant resource from the base post. Linking out is a great way to love the community.

And if you don’t have it, stop reading this, GO GET IT, because you are the only one who doesn’t have it yet!

The All in One SEO Pack is your virtual Search Engine Optimizer. It does all the dirty jobs of adding Meta tags, the Title tag, adding Meta keywords, adding post Description, avoiding indexing of duplicate pages (like Archives and Category pages) and other SEO stuffs that a normal blogger won’t like doing. And the best part; it’s all automated.

If you are not too much concerned about SEO, then you may not have tweaked the plugin, even though you already have it installed. The default installation is powerful enough, but it gets better with some extra tweaks. Exploiting something is so much fun!

Tweaking the All in One SEO Pack

The SEO plugin consists of two parts: Plugin Options Page, and a widget on the Post Editor. See the screenshots below and you will get an idea of what each page is meant to be. If you haven’t done anything yet to these pages, its time to start doing something now.

Add a Home Page Title

The Homepage title is the one line description of your blog; it need not be the same as the name of your blog. Tell the visitors what your blog is all about here. Include the keywords that would bring you traffic over a long period of time. And keep it short; don’t make it longer than 70 characters. This Title Appears on the Search Results and on the Browser Window when you are on the homepage.

The Plugin Options Page

Add Description and Keywords

The Homepage Title is for the readers, but the Description and the Keywords are for the Search Engines. Describe your Blog to the Search Engines and most importantly, add the most popular keywords on your site to the Keywords Section. Adding too many keywords lessens the keyword weight of each keyword, so include only the most important ones here.

No Index all the Duplicate pages

Did you know that on the web, there exists at least three copies of every post your write? Well, the funny thing is that it’s right within your blog! You have one copy on the homepage, one on archives page, and yet another on the category page, not to mention the additional copies on the tag pages. Remember, Google hates duplicate content so better noindex the duplicate pages. (See the arrows)

Add Post Title and Description

The Widget on the Post Editor

The Second Part of this WordPress SEO plugin is a widget on the Post Editor Page. Once the plugin is installed you will see the widget below every post of yours. Add the Title of the Post and a Description on this Widget. You have to do this every time you write a new post. Adding a Keyword Rich, human-friendly hand-crafted description is important because Google uses this description on the Search Results page. So it acts like a Welcome message to a potential visitor. (See image below)

See the Description ( Below the title, in black )

Finally, Enter the Keywords

These are the keywords that go into the Meta keywords tag of the html of the page. It is said that Google no longer uses Meta keywords, anyhow, other Search Engines uses still uses them. Enter the keywords from the post here. If you do Keyword research, then this is the right place to enter the suggested keywords.

The SEO plugin is a quick solution to all your SEO needs. It’s a must have for every WordPress blog.

Update:

When Canonical URLs were introduced, a new check-box was added in the settings page, just above “Rewrite Titles”. Keep that check-box titled “Canonical URLs” ticked.

Google Adsense ads are priced at $0.01 to over $36 per click, but the publisher has not control over the minimum Earning per Click. The Google Adsense Program decides which ad to display based on the keywords on the content page and the number of ad slots. If we could somehow remove the low paying ads, we could make more money online. Let’s see how to remove those Low Paying Adsense Ads.

Suppose, a publisher gets 100 clicks on average any given day. If his Adsense Ads are priced ad $0.01 per click, he will earn $1. What if it is $3 of $4 per click? Well, you can’t ensure that every click will be of $3 or above, but you can remove those ads that pay you nothing. ($0.01 is nothing).

Removing Low Paying Ads that Give You Nothing

Google Adsense has a Competitive Ad Filter which was originally indented to remove ads from competing websites or business corporations (Intel would never want AMD Processor’s Ads to run on their pages). In our case, the Low Paying ads are our competition so we can use the links of those sites and get rid of them. But how will we know who are the low paying advertisers?

Thankfully, AdsBlackList helps you find those low paying advertisers on your website. AdsBlackList maintains a constantly updated list of Low Cost per Click (LCPC) Advertisers and Made for Adsense (MFA) Advertisers. Based on the keywords on your site, ABL find out which ads are most probable to appear on your site. Then it generates a list of Top 200 LCPC and MFA advertisers. You can copy this list into the Competitive Ad Filer in Adsense and start blocking the low paying ads!

Go to AdsBlackList Homepage and Register.

From the Sidebar, Go to My Account >> Add New Domain

Give the Site Name, URL and up to 20 keywords. Make sure that the most relevant keywords are included (incase you have more than 20 keywords)

From Sidebar, Click Generate Filter List. The ‘Available Domains’ will list the domains that you have added in the previous step. Drag and Drop the domain under consideration to the ‘Keywords from Selected Domains’ box.

Choose the type of Filter list needed, i.e. MFA ads and / or LCPC ads and press Submit.

Copy the generated list.

Login to Google AdSense and go to AdSense Setup >> Competitive Ad Filter.

Paste the list in the AdSense for Content box. You may also paste the same list in AdSense for Search and AdSense for Feeds as well, if you use any of them.

Press ‘Save Changes’ and you are ready to earn more with every click!

Ever since I started using AdsBlackList, I haven’t seen $0.01 for any click. AdsBlackList is still in beta and is constantly updated their Black List. So you have to regenerate the list after a while to block the new Low Paying Advertisers that might be using your ad space, yet paying you nothing ($0.01 is nothing!)

Permalink of a page is the address of the page shown on the browser’s address bar. Optimizing permalinks gives better SEO because search engines use the keywords on the permalink to classify the page and better classification brings in more quality search visits.

Why is Permalink Optimization important?

See these links:

mllionclues.com/?p=21 (a)

millionclues.com/?page_id=100 (b)

Now see these links:

millionclues.com/tutorials/twitter-quick-start-guide (A)

millionclues.com/contact (B)

The first two links does not tell us anything, they are just links. The second set of links gives us a better idea of the target pages. The link marked (A) tell us that it is a tutorial and to be more specific, it is a quick start guide for twitter. Similarly, link (B) tell that the target page contains contact information.

These are the same with the search bots too. A well structured permalink tells the web crawler a lot about the page. This information gives the pages better indexing and better SEO. Moreover, the Google search algorithm gives more importance to the keywords in the permalink. The more keyword match the permalink has with the search query, the higher will be the position of the page on the Search Results Page.

How to Optimize Permalinks on WordPress

Change the Permalink Structure

The default permalink structure looks like the first set of links (a) and (b). Change the default structure to something similar to (A) and (B)

Custom Permalinks In WordPress

Go to WordPress admin >> Settings >> Permalinks.

Under the ‘Custom Settings’ press the ‘Custom Structure’ radio button.

The most recommended Permalink Structure is the Home / Category / Post-Title Structure. For that enter the following in the text box in the Custom Structure selection: /%category%/%postname%

Save the changes.

If you are not satisfied with this Permalink Structure, read the Custom Permalinks Guide from WordPress Codex.

Remove irrelevant words from the permalinks for better Keyword weight

SEO guru’s believe that the keywords in the permalink are weighted based on the number of words in the permalink. The more words the permalink contain, the less will be the keyword weight of each keyword and hence lower will be its relevancy in a search.

Once you have a custom permalink as we did above, your posts will be automatically assigned the permalink from the title of your post. The permalink will be displayed just below the title once you save your post or after an auto save. You can edit the permalinks here. (See image)

Edit Permalinks In WordPress

Edit the permalinks and remove any unnecessary connecting words. Keep the Post Title long and Self-Explanatory for the readers and the permalinks short for the Search Engines. But do not stuff the permalinks with keywords alone. Make sure that anyone who reads the permalink gets an idea of what the post is about.

An example: The permalink of this post has been edited as optimize-wordpress-permalinks-seo-friendly. That keeps the permalink short, makes it keyword relevant and keeps it self explanatory.

If you had been using the default permalinks and wish to migrate now, use Dean’s Permalinks Migration Plugin and move safely without losing any back-links or google pagerank.

Update: WordPress says its not recommended to use Category/Post-Name style, but I havent had a problem yet. I have worked on over 200 WordPress websites. If you are concerned, you could just use the following format for the same results:

%post_id%/%category%/%postname%/

It will add the post id before the category name and each post will have a unique number in the permalink.

Still you might not be getting traffic for your blog. The content of your site is the real key factor for success, but others have to come to your website to see your content. That’s where Website optimization is relevant.

So, what is WordPress Optimization?

Optimization means making the best out of the available resources. WordPress Optimization means tweaking the contents and theme of your WordPress site so as to increase your Search Engine Ranking, Better Search Engine Visibility, Faster Loading of Pages and Better Revenue from Ads. WordPress Optimization is all about boosting the performance of your blog so as to increase traffic and enhance the reader experience.

This series is a report of my ongoing research into Optimization based on WordPress. But a major part of the tutorial will be applicable to every publisher irrespective of the platform (Blogger or WordPress or Drupal). I will keep the content focused on WordPress, with tweaks for other publishing systems wherever applicable.

What pre-requisites do I need to understand this tutorial?
